We made cookies tonight.

She approached the decorating of said cookies very seriously

and with the utmost concentration

with a few tastes snuck in here and there

and a giggle or two when she got caught.

I’ll admit it was a bit of a mess

but so worth the end result.

Yum!

(And J’s office will be the recipient of some slightly deformed and oddly decorated cookies tomorrow.)

Ava fixed us dinner (prepped ahead at daycare*).

And we were thankful.

Of course, I was cranky for at least half the day, too. I miss my family. I miss my friends who are scattered throughout the world. Such is the life of a military wife, I guess.

And yes, my heart did melt a little bit when her daycare project said she was thankful for Mama**. I sincerely hope, however, that the egg-shaped creature in the middle is not supposed to be a representation of me. While I know I’ve gained some weight over the last couple of years, I’m not oval quite yet.

We ate lots, of course. Especially vinegar laden deviled eggs. Ava ate 4 – first eating the filling (with fingers and with spoon) and then the egg. She is sooooo my kid.

We finished up the evening with a viewing of The Muppet Christmas Carol. She was only slightly impressed but I still lovelovelove it. Who knows – this may be the start of a new holiday tradition.

* I knew those beans would come in handy!

** She’s thankful for her Daddy, too. She’s just having a bit of a Mama’s girl phase at the moment. I think because her Daddy has been traveling so much lately – she’s a bit freaked out about it.

Happy Thanksgiving, Everybody.

(That’s what he gets for showing up unexpectedly early.)

A friend on Facebook who also has a 3 year old posted this meme and I had to give it a shot with Ava. My commentary will be in parentheses.

1. What is something mama always says to you?
2010: “I don’t know.” (I’m not sure whether she means she doesn’t know or if she’s referring to my answer after 9 billion ‘whys’ from her after I’ve exhausted my knowledge on any given subject and then finally admit defeat by telling her that I don’t know the whys of everything.)

2. What makes mama happy?
2010: “Ava plays with Mama’s hair.” (She’s right – it’s so cute when I’m holding her and she unconsciously will tug at or twist my hair around her fingers. She’s also taken to playing with it all the time and telling me, “You hair look so nice, Mama.” On the other hand, she also tells me quite often, “You hair a mess, Mama.”)

3. What makes mama sad?
2010: “I don’t know.”

4. How does your mama make you laugh?
2010: No answer (but she laughed like a hyena every time I asked her this question).

5. What was your mama like as a child?
2010: “I don’t know.”

6. How old is your mama?
2010: “Five.” (That’s also how old she’ll tell you she is if you ask her.)

7. How tall is your mama?
2010: “Short.” (Thanks, baby. You’re one to talk. The doc just told us to expect that you are going to be a teeny thing since you’re only 26 pounds and 35 inches tall at 3 years old.)

8. What is her favorite thing to do?
2010: “Playing with Sam.” (Sam is the newest papillon and we’ve been constantly working on down and no jumping the last few days. It, btw, is not even close to being my favorite thing to do.)

9. What does your mama do when you’re not around?
2010: “I don’t know.” (Oh, please. It’s not like she has a life that doesn’t revolve around me anyway – I’m sure that’s what Ava was thinking.)

10. If your mama becomes famous, what will it be for?
2010: *Blank look* (eyelashes batting, crickets chirping)

11. What is your mama really good at?
2010: “Playing with Ava.” (Awwwwww!)

12. What is your mama not good at?
2010: “I don’t know.”

13. What does your mama do for a job?
2010: “Email.” (Some days that feels like the only thing I do manage to accomplish at work so she’s not too far off base.)

14. What is your mama‘s favorite food?
2010: “Fries.” (not my favorite and I don’t get them very often so it’s a treat for me and her when I do)

15. What makes you proud of your mama?
2010: “Chicken nuggets.” (Apparently it’s amazing what I can do with a car and a drive-thru window.)

16. If your mama were a cartoon character, who would she be?
2010: “Chicken nuggets.” (Can you tell that we had takeout from McDonald’s for dinner this evening?)

17. What do you and your mama do together?
2010: “Go to the beach.” (We did this today.)

18. How are you and your mom the same?
2010: “We have the same shirt.” (Ummm, no. I had on white and she had on stripes.)

19. How are you and your mama different?
2010: “We not different. You Mama.” (I suspect this answer will be much different next year.)

20. How do you know your mama loves you?
2010: “You hug Ava.” (And kiss Ava, and eskinose Ava, and tell Ava all the time that I loveyouloveyouloveyou.)

21. What does your mama like most about your daddy?
2010: “You hug Ava AND Daddy.” (So glad she notices this.)

22. Where is your mama‘s favorite place to go?
2010: “SHOPPING!!” (And she even said it with the exclamation points!!)

I think I just might have to start a tradition and do this every Mother’s Day. It should be interesting to see how her answers change through the years.

The Easter Bunny visited our house and left a plethora of eggs throughout the house and yard – all just begging to be gathered. Being the earth-friendly recycling type of people that we are we kind of just cheated and reused the eggs and goodies collected from the daycare party and local egg gathering gathering here in our local park. What? It’s not like we she needed any more candy.

J may have helped the Easter Bunny out a bit – but that’s our secret.

Unlike last year, Ava needed no encouragement to start collecting her eggs

and very little assistance in finding them.

She followed the bunny droppings all the way to the back yard

and up, up, up to the best Easter basket EVER.

Crayons, cheap jewelry, a(nother) fake cell phone, and her very own digital camera.

And that, my friends, may just inspire a whole entire photoblog dedicated solely to her fledgling attempts at becoming a professional photographer before age 4. Ansel Adams she ain’t, but she is showing a remarkable leaning toward fashion photography – shoes, to be specific. Primarily her own but no feet are safe nor is any space sacred to her.

We finished up the day with an afternoon spin or 8 round the carousel at our local theme park. What a great way to kick off Spring!
